Amir Khan vs Terence Crawford: Date reportedly set for Madison Square Garden fight

Khan has rejected the chance to fight fellow Brit Kell Brook in favour of a shot at welterweight world champion Crawford

Amir Khan’s welterweight world title clash with Terence Crawford is set to take place on April 20 at Madison Square Garden.

The announcement is expected to be formally announced next week and will be his 11th fight in America since he first fought there nine years ago.

The fight, could earn the 32-year-old Khan (33-4, 20 KOs), a minimum of £4million.

His last fight in the US ended in a brutal knockout to Canelo Alvarez in 2016 at the new T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, having decided to move up two weight divisions to middleweight.

It means the grudge match with Kell Brook will have to wait, despite Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn wanting Khan, who has one fight left on his contract with the British promoter, to face Brook in an all-British battle.

Speaking in December, Khan said: “Fighting for a pound-for-pound title would be amazing. “To win it would be even better, so I think I’m in a position where I can get that fight with the pound-for-pound champion at the moment. The Brook fight is always going to be there. It’s for no title, whereas I’m getting offered a world title and the pound-for-pound title. So why not?”

Top Rank chief Bob Arum, who promotes Crawford (34-0, 25 KOs), expects details to be finalised in the next fortnight.

“Everything looks good. Hopefully, we’ll be able to make an announcement next week. It’s not done until it’s done, but I’m very optimistic,” he told ESPN.

“New York or Las Vegas – those are the two spots we are talking about,” he added. “It’s a big fight and Khan and Crawford have lot of people fly to their fights.

“They both have good fan bases, and that’s what a place like Las Vegas looks for – customers to come in and fill the hotel rooms. A place like Madison Square Garden looks to fill the seats and doesn’t care about filling hotel rooms. Wherever, I am very optimistic the fight is going to happen.”

Crawford, 31, is considered by most to be one of the very best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport and none of his last five opponents have reached the final round.

The last time he faced a Brit was in 2014, when he comprehensively beat Ricky Burns to win the WBO light welterweight crown.

Top Rank had been in talks with former welterweight titlist Luis Collazo, a former Khan opponent, but the Bolton speedster is a bigger name and would be another impressive scalp to add to his unbeaten resume should he prevail.

A Khan win, would no doubt be up there with the best of his career, alongside the thrilling victory over Marcos Maidana. Defeat could push him into retirement or he may choose to cash out with one last mammoth pay-day against Brook.
